How to play Merge 2048

Controls and the core rule

Merge 2048 is played on a four-by-four grid. Swipe in any direction on a touchscreen, or use the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard. Every tile on the board slides as far as it can in the direction you chose, all at once — you are moving the whole board, never an individual tile.

When two tiles showing the same number collide, they merge into a single tile with double the value. Two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on up the chain toward the 2048 tile that gives the game its name. A tile that has just merged is locked for the remainder of that move, so a row of four 4s becomes two 8s in one swipe rather than a single 16.

After every move that actually changes the board, a new 2 or 4 appears in a random empty cell. The game ends when the grid is full and no adjacent pair shares a value, leaving no legal move.

Undo, scoring and your best run

Each game grants exactly one undo. It reverses your most recent move, restoring both the tile layout and the score to their previous state, and it is spent for the rest of that run. Save it. The right moment is almost always the single careless swipe that buries your largest tile away from its corner — not an early-game mistake you still have plenty of board space to recover from.

Your score increases by the value of every tile created through a merge, so a single 512 merge is worth more than dozens of small ones. Your highest score persists in your browser between sessions and appears next to the current score at all times.

The corner strategy

Pick one corner and commit to it for the entire game. Keep your largest tile anchored there and build a descending staircase of values along the edge leading away from it. Most strong players use the bottom-left corner and cycle mainly between left and down, bringing in up or right only when neither of those changes the board.

The move to avoid is the one that lifts your biggest tile out of its corner. On a four-by-four grid a single misplaced swipe can scatter a carefully built staircase and leave you with no way to reassemble it. If a direction would move your anchor tile, treat it as a last resort rather than a normal option.

Reaching 2048 and beyond

Work in stages rather than chasing the big tile directly. Build the largest number you can along your chosen edge, merge it down into the corner, then rebuild the row above it. Reaching 2048 requires exactly 1024 spawned tiles to be combined perfectly, so the discipline of the staircase matters far more than any individual clever move.

Keep at least two or three empty cells open at all times. A crowded board removes your options and forces you into the one swipe you were trying to avoid. And when you do land the 2048 tile, the game does not stop — the board continues, and 4096 is entirely reachable from a clean corner structure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play 2048 on mobile?

Swipe up, down, left or right anywhere on the board. All tiles slide together in that direction and matching pairs merge.

How many undos do I get?

One per game. It reverses your last move and restores the score, then is unavailable for the rest of that run.

Is my best score saved?

Yes, in your browser’s local storage. It persists between sessions but is never uploaded anywhere.

Can I keep playing after reaching 2048?

Yes. The board continues until no legal moves remain, so 4096 and beyond are possible.
